Victor Central School's Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Programs

Dorothy DiAngelo, Building Administrator

Welcome to the ECEC! We are the first stop for students in the Victor Central School District. Our teachers and parents know that the early years have a significant influence on a child’s future success in school. To assure that each child has ample opportunities to be successful, the Early Childhood Education Center offers a wide variety of programs to meet individual needs and maximize student learning. The Early Childhood Education Center is home to over 400 students in Pre-K and Kindergarten and has over 40 faculty and staff members that are committed to providing the best possible learning environment for young children.
Kindergarten language arts instruction is organized around five combined components of reading and writing. Instruction includes time for read-alouds, independent reading and shared reading, in which the teacher reads a story with the class. Children build their writing skills by receiving direct daily instruction from the teacher and by having many opportunities to write. All of this instruction contributes in complementary ways to the literacy development of young children.
The goal of the math curriculum is to help students develop problem-solving skills that will serve lifelong learning. In addition to traditional fundamental arithmetic skills, our teachers ask children to use multiple and creative problem-solving strategies, reason logically and communicate mathematical information effectively. Kindergartners are also exposed to social studies, science, health, music, art, physical education, and library media services.
Good Start and Universal Pre-K (UPK), our pre-kindergarten programs for four and five year olds, offers our children many opportunities for singing, acting, dancing, playing, building and sharing with their peers in a relaxed and flexible learning environment. There are a multitude of learning centers designed for our children each month. These are child-directed activities that are meaningful and relevant to the students’ lives and the world around them.

Children are encouraged to use creativity, imagination, problem-solving skills, social interaction and fine and gross motor skills throughout the day. Putting children in charge of their own activities and materials will assist in the development of independence and basic skills, increase self-esteem, and promote feelings of competence. These stations consist of the math and puzzle center, dramatic play center, science center, block center, writing center, reading center and art center.
Children are also provided with opportunities to develop and strengthen their gross motor skills through theme-based activities. Music also plays a major role in Pre-K classrooms. Children are exposed to music through finger plays and songs, creative dance, and musical instruments.
