November 15, 2019 NEWSLETTER VSHS eNews Update - November 15/16, 2019 Dear Families,
So.......apparently winter is here, and it has already made this week a tricky one from remembering how to drive in the snow to getting used to frigid temperatures. As a reminder, when school is closed due to a weather event, we "skip" the letter day of the day(s) off and pick right back up with the scheduled letter day when we get back. Students will frequently ask me if I have any "power" in deciding if school is canceled, and I can assure you that I do not! I find out about school cancelations at the same time as everyone else. When we are expecting poor weather that could impact school, please tune into local channels for closures. Some local channels have websites where you can sign up to have a text message sent to your phone when cancellations are announced. We are also "in between" our extracurricular seasons. Fall activities are largely finished and we are moving into the winter season. We are extremely fortunate to have so many extracurricular options for our students. Part of being involved in these wonderful activities is to keep up on academics and to make that the priority. As always, we thank you for the support you give to our students and to our school! Finally, I wanted to give a special shout-out to our VSHS Positive School Climate Committee for sponsoring our annual "It Starts With Hello/Kindness Week." The purpose of this week is to help students feel part of an inclusive culture and less isolated. On Tuesday, students and staff wore name tags to encourage students and staff to say hello to an unfamiliar person. This past Wednesday was "International Kindness Day and students and staff wore "Choose Kind" t-shirts or shirts with similar positive and encouraging messages. On Thursday, PSCC advisors and representatives distributed "Start with Hello" stickers to students and teachers throughout the day. And this morning we started out with "Fist Bump Friday!" Music was played outside the North Wing, Bus Loop, and English Wing entrances. PSCC representatives gave fist bumps to students as they entered the building. Thank you PSCC for the "positive vibes!"
Here is the news for this week...
The Impact of Words
We have recently had several instances where people in our school have said something or posted something on social media or in a text message that has had lasting, hurtful and damaging effects on others. Words have power, they have impact, and they cannot be retracted once they are vocalized. The damage that racist, hurtful, insensitive, sexist, homophobic, etc. sentiments have on a community of people causes irreparable damage. Many of these situations can result in severe discipline from the school and possibly the involvement of law enforcement. Please partner with us and encourage your child to be a positive source of strength in our school, monitor their online activity and encourage your child to speak up or find a trusted adult when they see or hear something that is not right. Thank you for your support.
