January 10, 2020 NEWSLETTER VSHS eNews Update - January 10/11, 2020 12 Dear Families,
After a relaxing two week break for our students and staff, school is back in action in 2020! I was happy to see our school community come back to campus this past Monday, and the students looked refreshed, rested and ready to learn. With only one more week of classes before midterm exam week (January 21-24), our students will be busy preparing their end of semester final projects and studying for in-class and midterm week exams. Please encourage your child to get plenty of rest and to study for their exams. A brief list of midterm exam reminders and a copy of the exam schedule can be found later in this eNews update. Speaking of midterm exams..... I have been reading some professional articles related to the topics of stress and anxiety students may experience when it comes to assessments, time management and completion of work. When I went to high school in the late 80's-early 90's, I clearly remember the pressure I felt during this time of year. Expectations on high school students to perform at high levels have only increased since then, and (rightfully so) the research on this topic is at the forefront of many conferences and workshops I attend. In addition to the rigors of school, our students are also balancing extracurricular activities, part time jobs, and unexpected life events which, when added up, can create enormous amounts of stress. I would ask that you check in with your child and to have open, honest discussions about their stress level particularly as we look to the end of the semester. Our counseling department and administrative team are always available for students who need support! I also want to recognize our amazing Link Crew student leaders (led by co-advisors Amy Rotoli and Laura Avissato). This week, Link Leaders checked in with freshmen, helping to prepare them for their first high school midterm experience. Freshmen were supported in creating a personal exam calendar, with study tips, and through advice from the older and wiser upperclassmen on exam week logistics. Link Leaders wish all of their freshman luck in the new year! Thank you Link Crew!!!!!
