October 19/20, 2018 NEWSLETTER VSHS eNews Update - October 19/20, 2018
Dear Families,
Next week (Oct. 22-26) kicks of National Red Ribbon Week in the fight against drugs. This Year's theme is "Life is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free". We will be participating in this national program by asking students and staff to wear red on Monday October 26th, and our PTSA parent reps will be placing red ribbons throughout our campus. The Red Ribbon Campaign was developed in response to the murder of a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent in 1985. At the age of 37, Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was killed in Mexico while fighting illegal drug crimes. When he first told his mother of his desire to be a DEA agent, she tried to talk him out of it. He told her that he's only one person but that he wanted to make a difference. His courage and determination is honored to this day by the red ribbon campaign. Because of his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin in his honor and other organizations that were tired of the destruction drugs and alcohol were causing in society adopted the symbol of the red ribbon in his honor. Wednesday during lunches we will be asking students and staff to sign a pledge to live healthy and drug free. There are a variety of activities planned for next week, including a parent and community forum on Tuesday evening from 7-8:30pm in our Performing Arts Center on the current E-Cig, Vaping and JUUL trends (see more information below). We hope you will join us in this cause and spread the word that one person can make a difference! Here are the updates for this weekend...

From Mrs. Spitzer
We have had a number of parents report students who are ill with "Hand Foot and Mouth Disease," especially those on our sports teams. This is a viral illness that typically affects younger kids but seems to be prevalent in all ages in the community now as well. The spread of disease can be contained with good hand washing. Symptoms include ulcers, or sores, inside or around the mouth, and a rash or blisters on the hands, feet, legs, or buttocks. Children are allowed to return to school once they feel well per NYS guidelines. Pregnant persons who have had direct exposure to someone with the disease should consult with their physician. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Spitzer at spitzerk@victorschools.org or (585) 924-3252 ext. 5420.
