VSHS eNews Update - October 26/27, 2018

Image

Dear Families,

What a busy time of year!!! This week, VSHS in conjunction with PTSA participated in the annual Red Ribbon Week effort to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. This year's theme was "Life is Your Journey - Travel Drug-Free!" and we had a number of activities in our building to support the cause. On Monday, students and staff wore red as a show of support for healthy living. On Tuesday evening, we hosted a public forum where Dr. Shaili Sani and Dr. Beixi Li from the University of Rochester presented information about the marketing, health implications and potential addiction issues associated with e-cigarettes and vaping devices such as JUULs. During lunch periods on Wednesday, hundreds of students signed pledges to live a healthy and drug-free life! And the week was capped off with a door decorating contest! Students and teachers in period 1A/C had the opportunity to decorate their classroom doors to coincide with the RRW theme, and this year we had the most participation we ever had - 20 classrooms! The top three winners of the class door decorating contest received breakfast on Thursday morning compliments of our PTSA - Mr. Johanna Arnitz, Mrs. Jennifer Wideman and Mrs. Erica Thompson! We also want to thank the rest of the classes who participated: Mrs. Sue Utz, Mrs. Sara Kutter, Mrs. Laura Sarra, Mrs. Danyelle Westbrook, the Guidance/College & Career office, Mrs. LeeAnne Birkemeier, Mrs. Alyse Wuest, Mrs. Emily Morsheimer, Mrs. Tara Hopson, Mrs. Amy Rotoli, Ms. Mallory Horsfall, Mr. Matt Mayne, Mrs. Laura Avissato, Mrs. Peg Daly, Mrs. Dawn Knapp, Mr. Andrew Buttram and Mrs. Jackie Boss!

We are two weeks away from the end of the first marking period of the 2018-2019 school year. As always, we encourage students to meet with their teachers after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays if they have questions regarding understanding of content or need to make up work.  If you would like parent access to SchoolTool, please contact Mrs. Joanne Thomas (585-924-3252 ext. 5306 or thomasj@victorschools.org) and she can assist you.

Please read through the rest of this eNews for important information about events this week including our fall play (Romeo and Juliet - tonight and tomorrow!), Robotics, the NYS Marching Band competition Sunday evening, athletic contests, and college information including Thursday night's "College Night."

This is a reminder that online registration for winter sports ends November 5th, 2018. There is a new online program to manage sports registrations. The link can be found at the end of this eNews. To ensure an on time start for your sport, please complete the application no later than 11/2/2018.

Also, we continue to have a number of parents report students who are ill with "Hand Foot and Mouth Disease," especially those on our sports teams. This is a viral illness that typically affects younger kids but seems to be prevalent in all ages in the community now as well. The spread of disease can be contained with good hand washing. Symptoms include ulcers, or sores, inside or around the mouth, and a rash or blisters on the hands, feet, legs, or buttocks.

Children are allowed to return to school once they feel well per NYS guidelines. Pregnant persons who have had direct exposure to someone with the disease should consult with their physician. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Spitzer at spitzerk@victorschools.org or (585) 924-3252 ext. 5420.

FIRST Robotics News...

The VCSD Devil Tech FIRST Robotics team will be competing TOMORROW, Saturday October 27th, at the Main St. Armory located down town Rochester, from 8am to 5pm. 43 teams from New York, Pennsylvania and Canada will be participating in this repeat of last year's FIRST Robotics competition.
The event is free and open to the public!

Here is a great piece of news from Mr. Fleckenstein: "A few weeks ago I was contacted by a representative from Rochester Global Connections to see if the VCSD Robotics program might be interested in hosting a delegation of STEM educators from Belarus. Last Wednesday, 3 adult and 4 student representatives from the Robotics team led a tour of the technology education and FIRST Robotics facility and programs for the ten visiting educators and their interpreter. There were many enthusiastic questions/exchanges regarding the hands on nature and student achievement of these programs. It was a really enjoyable experience!"

Kudos to our Robotics team for being such gracious hosts! Thank you!!!!

DECA Update

In addition to preparing for the regional competition and online testing, our VSHS DECA chapter is actively participating in community service throughout the area. To focus on our community, we volunteered at the Alzheimer's Walk last Saturday at Frontier Field. We will also be visiting senior citizens at the Legacy, supporting the Jenny Bear Project/Bivona Child Advocacy Center, selling kazoos for Camp Good Days and more! DECA thanks everyone who supported our Five Guys fundraiser on Tuesday night!
