Academics

Mission

Together we create engaging learning environments that promote empathy, inclusivity and opportunity by uniting community and classroom. Our dedicated, supported staff prepare and inspire every student to achieve their academic potential and thrive in an ever-changing world.

Learning & Instruction

Students attending the Victor Central School District are highly engaged in an environment that aligns authentic learning to core academic standards while simultaneously developing character and citizenship. Building on their natural curiosity and learning styles, our students will emerge as creative, collaborative, critical thinkers who can communicate effectively and persevere in a continuously and rapidly changing world in order to meet their individual potential.

Culture

The VCS school community is representative of many cultures, and therefore culture has an impact on how our students experience schools. We believe that learning is rooted in the lives and experiences of people and cultivated through activities that connect people through their unique cultures and identities.  We strive to create student-centered learning environments that affirm cultural identities, foster positive academic outcomes and develop our students’ abilities to connect across lines of difference. As a community of students, parents, and educators, we work to foster a safe and accepting environment where students experience a sense of belonging and self-worth, treating others with civility, respect, and kindness.

Student Support & Opportunities

In our community, a student’s social, emotional and physical well-being is as important as their academic success. We believe that students who can reflect on their experiences will foster the growth necessary to become responsible decision makers. In addition, we provide a variety of support and opportunities so that all students can realize their full potential.

Overview by Year

Pre-Kindergarten

The VCS offers Pre-Kindergarten as a New York State funded program specifically designed for 4-year-olds not eligible for kindergarten. Each year, VCS  invites eligible children who reside in the district to apply. The district is pleased to be able to offer our community full-day (five hours) and half-day (2.5 hours) options. Transportation is not part of this state-funded program.

The play-based program engages students in social and emotional skills with a heavy emphasis on communication. We offer an in-district full-day program and half-day programs, and additionally partner with 3 outstanding community based child care providers. Locations are determined by a random lottery, after the registration period.  If your child did not receive a slot in the lottery, they will move to a waitlist and may receive a slot as they open. Participation in a Pre-Kindergarten program is not required for a student to be eligible for Kindergarten the following year, although it is great preparation for Kindergarten.

The Pre-Kindergarten program is five days a week, Monday - Friday, and follows the VCS school calendar.

Grades K - 3

Across our K-3 classrooms in VCS, we strive to provide a strong foundation for our youngest learners. As students progress across the K-3 continuum, there is a noticeable transition in the nature of the expectation for what is being learned. Students transition from learning early literacy and numeracy skills, to applying those skills within new contexts. Play is an important component of learning in Grades K-3, and students are supported with the social-emotional skill development through in-class lessons and building-wide community projects. Students participate in music, art and physical education as well.  A Suzuki strings program is available for children in grades 2-3 at Victor Primary school.  In addition, students in grades 1-3 have access to enrichment opportunities through both the Library Media Centers and the VCS Inquiry Program.

Grades 4 - 6

Children continue their elementary program of studies in grades 4-6 at the Victor Intermediate School. Students participate in a specially designed “team” model, in which 2 classroom teachers deliver instruction in a Humanities block (Social Studies and ELA) or a STEM block (Science and Mathematics).  Students meet each morning for a ‘homeroom’ where community building and social emotional skill development is the focus. Students can participate in band, orchestra and/or choral programs starting at 4th grade.  Additionally, children at VIS have access to enrichment opportunities through the Library Media Center and the VCS Inquiry Programs and can participate in a variety of clubs and activities.

Grades 7 - 8

At Victor Junior High School, staff support the development of 21st century citizens through rigorous, relevant learning experiences. Seventh and eighth graders at VJHS are members of 1 of 6 academic teams, allowing teachers to meet and plan instruction for a group of shared students. Students have opportunities to accelerate into mathematics or science courses that would culminate in high school credit. In addition to the core subjects of Math, English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies, seventh and eighth graders are enrolled in Technology, World Language, Health, Home and Careers, Art and Music courses. Students can participate in robust orchestra, band and choral ensembles. There are a variety of clubs and activities that grow student interests and provide enriching experiences.
