Interested in finding out more about group bus stops?

In select neighborhoods, we are expanding the use of group bus stops. These locations are carefully selected after a thorough review of roadway conditions, traffic patterns, and student safety. Please know that not every bus stop will change, and every location is evaluated individually before any adjustments are made.

The primary reason for this change is simple - student safety.

Each time a school bus stops, traffic must come to a halt while students board or exit. Frequent stops increase the opportunities for motorists to become impatient or attempt to pass a stopped school bus, creating unnecessary risks. By using group bus stops where appropriate, our drivers have more distance to activate their warning lights and provide motorists with additional notice, helping create a safer loading and unloading environment for students.

An added benefit is that fewer stops help reduce the amount of time students spend riding the bus. More efficient routes also allow buses to remain on schedule for elementary transportation and afternoon athletic and extracurricular runs, benefiting students across the district.

When determining whether a group bus stop is appropriate, our Transportation Department considers a number of factors, including traffic speed and volume, visibility for both motorists and bus drivers, the availability of safe waiting areas, neighborhood layout, sidewalks, and each student's individual transportation needs, including any IEP requirements.

In many neighborhoods, students are expected to walk a reasonable distance to a designated bus stop. For younger students, that is typically about the length of a football field, while older students may walk up to about two-tenths of a mile, which is just under one full lap around the school track. While these are general planning guidelines, every bus stop is carefully reviewed based on traffic patterns, visibility, road conditions, and other safety considerations to help ensure it is located in the safest practical location.

Prior to the start of the school year, families will receive instructions from the Transportation Department on how to access their student's bus information online, including pickup and drop-off locations.
