VCS Names New Coordinator of District Safety

On Thursday, August 18, 2022, the Victor Central School District Board of Education appointed retired New York State Police Sergeant, Steven Slavny, as the District’s new Coordinator of District Safety. Improving safety and security at VCS has been a major area of need. This position, in conjunction with the addition of two security officers, additional security in the evening, and our outstanding SRO, Officer Chumacero, will offer greater protection and security for our students, staff and community.

During his twenty-two-year tenure with the New York State Police, Slavny held a variety of posts in the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, Rochester, and Buffalo. He was promoted to Sergeant after only 6 years and subsequently held a variety of special details and command positions. As a NYSP Trooper and Sergeant, Slavny worked alongside, trained, supervised, and mentored hundreds of law enforcement personnel and collaborated with multiple other police agencies and government entities. He assisted in the development of leadership curriculum for the NYS Police Academy and was a certified NYSP Instructor. On September 11, 2001, Slavny was tasked to lead a crew of twenty-two troopers to New York City to assist with the rescue and relief effort at the site of the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Since retiring from the New York State Police, Slavny has been employed by Victor Central Schools for the past nine years as a teacher aide providing student safety/support by working closely with Officer Chumacero and school personnel. In addition to ensuring a safe school environment, Slavny is a mentor to many students. While his work as a teacher aide has been primarily at Victor Senior High School, Slavny’s duties frequently involve activity throughout all school buildings as well as at after school and off-site events.

VCS Superintendent, Dr. Tim Terranova said Slavny’s background as a law enforcement officer as well as his deep connections to the students and community make him an outstanding addition to the VCS team. “Mr. Slavny’s ability to look at the security needs of a comprehensive school district from a big picture view and then work collaboratively with the community to improve areas of need will have a major impact on the safety of everyone,” he said.

Slavny said it is an honor and unique privilege to be named the Victor Coordinator of District Safety and continue the work we have done over the last nine years. “My deepest appreciation to members of the School Board, Dr Terranova and the administrators within the district, all teachers and staff, and most importantly the Victor school community. All of us working together continue to make our district a proud leader in education and the nurturing of young minds. I look forward to continuing our collective progress,” he said.
